Introducing Abbey Cone
Hey Abbey, how the heck are you?
OMG! Hi!!! This is fun I feel like I have a pen pal. I'm doing well! Hope you are well too.
I am very well too thanks. So set the scene... where are you right now, and what are you up to today?
Okay. So, I'm sitting at my dining table at home. It's 12:30pm on a Tuesday. My dogs are lying at my feet under the table so that's cute for me. I'm drinking my second iced coffee of the day… listening to the new Silk Sonic record and writing this!
Tell me a bit about you.
Okay! I'm 23. I love writing songs. I feel the best when I'm singing. I love nature and animal documentaries, like the BBC ones (laughs). I love truthful and honest conversations, both having and listening to them. I'm a Libra. I wish I read more books. Talking openly and honestly about mental health, especially within my generation is very important to me. Oh! And I'm a foodie.
You released your debut song ‘Rhinestone Ring’ recently, what can you tell me about it?
‘Rhinestone Ring’ is my take on a classic country love song. Personally, I think I'll listen to it years from now and still feel really proud of it. It felt right to put it out first, especially after the pandemic.
How does it feel to have your debut song out in the wild?
It feels wild!!! I've been working towards it most of my life. I feel so proud of the music. Amidst all the uncertainty last year and even now, I believe in my songs so much. I can't wait to release more.
What was it like making the video? Fun or hard work?
Both! We filmed a lot of other things that day, so it was a long day of filming, but so fun. It was basically the first thing I had done since the pandemic started so it felt really exciting at the time.
If you could work with anyone, who would it be?
Wow. So many people... I'll just consider this a manifestation and throw em' all out there. (laughs) Post Malone. Miranda Lambert. Keith Urban. Miley Cyrus. Noah Cyrus. George Strait. Ed Sheeran. Brothers Osborne. Lewis Capaldi. HER. Brandon Flowers. Shania.
You’re from Texas originally, what can you tell me about your hometown?
Argyle, Texas. She was cute! Really small. Just a two-lane highway in and out! Pretty much the only thing there at the time was a gas station called "Johnny Joes" and a donut shop. High school football was basically a religion. I moved to Nashville when I was 16, so sometimes it feels like my hometown too!
And what’s your favourite thing about Nashville?
It was the first place I felt like I fit in! I'll always love it for that.
What can we expect from you for the rest of 2021?
For the rest of 2021, I'm really just preparing for 2022! Writing and prepping for my shows coming up early next year.
Social media; love it or hate it?
Both! I've had a hard time figuring out how to be myself on social media, fear of judgment held me back from putting myself out there for a long time. I realized the best part about there being so many people on social media is that there's bound to be a few that don't hate me. With that perspective I've actually been able to connect with a lot of people who have resonated with my music. And that's what it's about for me.
I’ve seen a few videos of your cover versions on your socials, what’s been the most difficult one to get right so far?
None of them have been too difficult actually. I covered Fleetwood Mac “Silver Springs” sometime last year and Doja Cat "need to know" Those were really fun for me.
What’s the most embarrassing song/album on your favourite playlist?
Probably multiple songs from childhood Disney shows. Embarrassing Gen Z things.
If you could recommend one artist to hear this week, who would it be?
Dijon!
What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?
Your questions have been really great actually! Maybe if I'm a morning person? The answer would be yes.
I’m most definitely not a morning person, so kudos to you! Finally, how do you take your coffee?
Intravenously. HA! Just kidding. Iced. Almond or Oat milk. A bit of sugar.
Thanks so much for your time Abbey, can’t wait to hear more music from you.
Thank YOU!!! I'm so grateful for the opportunity to talk with you and your readers. I hope I can make it across the pond in 2022!!!! Can’t wait for you to hear what’s coming next!
